LONGHAIRS MAGAZINE is HERE!

WELCOME TO LONGHAIRS MAGAZINE!

At long last Issue 1 of Longhairs Magazine is finally out! After many hours of fiddling with this and that I hope all the versions (print, ebook, pdf) look smooth and like somebody gave a damn when they made it. I'm no graphic designer, but I can't wait to get my print copy in the mail to see how it all turned out! There's nothing like holding something you put together and seeing the finished product in your hands. Digital is nice, but the old school print is where it's at for me.

This issue features images that have a summery feel to them, many beach shoots and carfree looks. It's nice to have a collection of my past shoots finally. A place where all the ideas come together and I can see it unfold! I'm excited to start working on Issue 2, the Winter issue which will feature images of a darker nature. Once that issue is done I'll need submissions from others to provide some of the content for Issue 3 as I'll need another shoot trip under my belt to flesh out future issues. 1 and 2 represent a collection of the recent past all the way back to the beginning when I first started shooting Longhair models. I'm hoping the way ahead will be paved with lots of luscious locks and many more epic images, lensed by myself and other great photographers.

Can't wait to see where this journey takes me!

You can get your copy of Issue 1

Shooting with Invicta, The Lowdown

Contact: invictasart@hotmail.com Facebook page: Invicta’s Art Photography

Thank you for choosing Invicta for your Shoot!

Hi! I’m Invicta, otherwise known as Christina Schellhous. But just call me Invicta, it’s easier. I am (probably) the world’s ONLY Longhair Photographer and have been specializing in this niche for about a year now. I love to help this under-represented segment of our population finally get the adoration it deserves.

Reasons for the Shoot:
  • Provide YOU with awesome new images for your portfolio and otherwise
  • Provide fresh editorial content for Longhairs Magazine
  • Provide images for Longhairs Calendar
  • Provide new, on-going content for all social media sites and blogs, including but not limited to Invicta’s Art Photography Facebook page, Longhairs Magazine Facebook page, Invicta’s Art Photography Blogspot, Wordpress, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.
  • Provide images to authors for book covers and interior images (custom shoots or on speculative basis)

Specific Shoot Goals:

To produce about 20-40 edited images spanning at least 4 different looks. I’m using the 4 seasons as a way to conceptually describe the mood each look should convey. The concept doesn’t have to be taken literally. It’s just a guideline to ensure we have a variety of looks.

Spring- Light, airy, simple, fresh, ‘cleanest’ of the 4- no suits though! ;) Can be brightly colored if you’re into that and have something awesome to wear.

Summer- The brightest outfit of the set. Also Shirtless, just underwear, or swimwear is possible, the look showing the most skin, generally. Lighter colors. Always in the mood for Western clothes too!

Fall- Mysterious, perhaps melancholic, dramatic but in a darker way than Summer. Colors could be darker neutrals or jewel tones, the colors commonly associated with Fall or whatever you have that’s closest to it.

Winter- The most intense, dark, even gothic look of the set. Heavy, dramatic, bold in a strong, vicious way. Less romantic than Fall. Cold. Could also do a Mountain Man look here as well. Western wear might also apply.

If we discuss a more specific theme or look before-hand, just go with that. This is general advice for either 1st time shoots with me or general shooting without a specific look in mind.

What
To
Wear?

Here’s
What
DON’T
want:

There’s
an exception
to almost
every rule,
when in doubt, send me a pic or ask me about it.
Jeans logos are fine.

Invicta LOVES
LEATHER PANTS!!!!!!!!

Plain T Shirts, plain pants, sometimes exciting pants too.

Regular old jeans and a tank, ripped jeans a plus! With a belt too, ya say? Now THAT’S fancy.

Stuff you can get wet and dirty. Because you will.

Everybody loves
a country boy.
Note:
THE BOOTS.
Invicta LOVES boots.

Dress shirts can be fun. Especially when they’re getting undressed.

Also sweaters, jackets, etc

*If you have any one-of-a-kind or designer pieces, please bring them!!! Weirder the better.

And don’t forget to ACCESSORIZE!
  • Hats
  • Scarves
  • jewelry
  • gloves
  • sunglasses
  • props if needed
  • BOOTS!

HAIR (very important):
NO PONYTAIL DENTS!
We will have none of this on my set.

Just come with it down, clean, bring a comb/brush, some hairspray and maybe a hair tie or two.

FACIAL HAIR:
Sexy Scruff is always a plus!
Generally, I prefer facial hair over clean shaven, but only if it comes
in right, not patchy.

But Hipster Beards: Can we just not?

Unless that’s where you’re hiding your hot twin brother....

I may just go fishing.

Because I’ve been catfished!

The Shoot Itself:

My general working style is to let the model begin modeling and then tweak it from there. I want to see what you’re bringing to the table. I may give you an overall mood to portray, or a character and then it’s up to you to throw something at me. I’ll let you know if it’s not working. If something very specific comes to either of our minds, I’ll bring it up, and you bring it up. If there’s a specific pose you want, just let me know and we’ll work it in. I prefer fluid movement or ‘flow’ posing more than stiff ‘hold this one pose forever’ kind of stuff. I’ll tell you to slow down if you’re moving too quick for me. I love catching ‘unposed’ candid moments of action the most! However they can be more difficult if you’re not used to modeling that way, plus there’s a lower keeper-rate for me generally due to motion blur.  If you need help with this, just let me know and I’ll work with you on it. :)

MODEL NEWBS, HOW TO NOT ANNOY ME:

Pretty informative. Pay special attention to the PRACTICE IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR part. ;) Look at what angles you look best in. What the light does to your face and body. I LOVE jawlines and cheekbones... do stuff that shows that off. Google ‘male model posing’. In other words; please PREPARE for your shoot. This is a collaboration! I have enough to keep track of (backgrounds, lighting, creepy stray onlookers, deathtraps, your clothes tags, etc), help me out here and be self aware. This makes me verrrrry happy! Better yet, watch your own clothes tags. And no hair ties around the wrist!

For the more experienced of you; THANK YOU for bringing your knowledge and skill to the table! It frees up my mind to make better photos. You are what drags my ass down to the city, an inhospitable environment for someone like me. So thank you for making it FUN for me to help you out. :)

So who is this Invicta, anyway?
Do I even still wanna do this?
This sounds painful.
Uhhhh..

Now don’t say I didn’t warn ya! If I’m bossy, it’s just because I know what we need to do to get ‘the shot’- I don’t mean to offend or come off hastily. Because of the introvert thing, when shooting I’m very focused, direct and one-track minded. I’m thinking of the technicals to get the shot right, so I may not be 100% in social mode. I try my best but just know that’s where I’m at. :) Idle chit chat can wait till after the shoot. Otherwise, I think the picture sums it up. As you can tell, I’m very laid back, enjoy humor and like to have fun... Otherwise, why are we even here?

A note about photographing men specifically:
Often men only want to be seen a certain way; strong, powerful, in charge. That’s fine, I love that stuff too, but often ladies respond better to the softer, more vulnerable images of men, especially the ones normally seen as ‘tough guys’. Keep this in mind while shooting. I’m even thinking about doing a book called Men in Tears, because that’s something we hardly ever see. If you think you have what it takes to let me photograph you in that state, I MOST CERTAINLY want to try it. It’s more naked than being naked. And I think men’s tears are more genuine than many women’s. Women are taught they can manipulate by crying, and often do. Men don’t, generally. So it’s very precious to see that. In short, don’t be afraid to show me more sides of yourself. Same goes for very happy, and we all know happy tears are the best!

And if you happen to have a cat, let’s arrange to get a few shots with it too, because I’m making a book about LHCG, Long Haired Cat Guys. haha My favorite!

Whew! You’re done! Now let’s go SHOOT!

Loki Maestro by Invicta's Art Photography

I had the pleasure of finally working with this guy, who goes by Loki Maestro, in LA on my big shoot tour. I've known about him for a few years it seems, so this was much anticipated. He was such a pleasure to work with and the shots flowed effortlessly as we strolled around the streets of Downtown LA on a relatively calm Sunday afternoon. I was surprised to see a bunch of fabric stores and clothing stores in this shopping area, I'll have to go back sometime just to explore it, sans camera. This was my first shoot of the trip and I was so happy to kick it off with a red head, so rare! Stay tuned to my fb page for more shots from this session: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Invictas-Art-Photography/155626707826692

Leon Garcia Mini Magazine is here!

Leon Garcia Mini Magazine

I did this shoot right after coming back from living in Vegas for a while and I still remember how sticky I felt in the newly humid air on the coast that day. I'd gotten used to the dryness of the desert and this CA climate was a welcome change for my skin. I've always loved the coast, both SoCal and NorCal so I'm always excited to go play in the sand with some models and see what happens. The sunset that night was GORGEOUS! I had a wonderful assistant with me, Zac Hill, and I was very satisfied with the pictures once I was able to get on my laptop and look them over. Leon was wonderful and I wish I could work with him again someday. For now though, I have this publication to teasure. You can too if you follow this link: http://www.blurb.com/b/5554255-leon-garcia

Baris Ari by Invicta's Art Photography

Had the pleasure of working with the epically talented Baris Ari last time I was in Venice, CA. Truly one of my favorite Longhair shoots to date! We strolled some grungy back alleys, ended up at the beach and then had pizza on the crowded boardwalk full of SoCal's most interesting people. I gave him  a choice of questions to answer afterwards and this is what he said. Thank you Baris for a wonderful time! Round 2 can't come soon enough! More photos at my FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Invictas-Art-Photography/155626707826692?fref=nf

  1. Would you ever cut your hair?
I would not ever want to cut it, but if an accident occurred and i lost a lot of hair, i would rock a mohawk!

  2. What made you want to grow it out?
It was forbidden in my school, and the rebellious force in me was too strong!

  3. Favorite hairstyle? Down, ponytail, braid, bun, other?
I am very simple with my hairstyles; I mostly wear it down and when there is too much wind or if i am eating I wear it in a ponytail.

  4. Do you think women like it? Have you ever gotten laid or not because of it?
    Duh!

  5. Have you ever wanted to dread it?
Nah, it always seemed like too much work

  6. What is your least favorite thing about humanity?
    Over-confidence

  7. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
When is the car in front of me gonna speed up...

  8. If I came to your house for dinner what would you prepare for me?
Yummy Turkish food like Stuffed Peppers or Iskender

  9. What’s your favorite song?
"Wishbone Ash: Throw down the sword"  but my favorite songs change every couple months..

  10. What is one misconception people have about you?
I seem cold-blooded to most people who don’t know me, but it’s mostly because i am just too laid back

Aaron Groben for Invicta's Longhairs coffee table book about Long Haired Men

Aaron Groben

Aaron Groben is an actor in LA I had the pleasure to work with and I will again for sure after being so pleased with how these images turned out. He's a hardworking man, always rushing from one audition to the next, often booking 4 or 5 gigs per week or more! I'm very happy he took the time to shoot with me. Here's the result! More Longhairs can be seen on my FB page:

Aaron Groben for Invicta's Longhairs Interview

Aaron Groben for Invicta's Longhairs

the interview

Here's what LA actor Aaron Groben has to say about being a Longhair. I enjoyed his responses and hope you do to. Tell me what you think!

1. What does having long hair mean to you? Is it a fashion statement or is it personally significant to you? If there is a deeper significance, what is it, please elaborate?
Long Hair has a masculinity and a wildness. I am untamed. I am wild at heart.

2. What made you want to grow it out? I grew it the first time cuz I wanted dreads. Grew it the other times because of the look, feel, style, and statement. Plus, think about any slow motion action sequence in a film. If the warrior has long hair it's infinitely more masculine, exciting, + active than short, non moving hair.

3. What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received regarding your hair? I was once awarded a Brad Pitt/Legends of the Fall Hair Award. Certificate and all.

4. Do you think women like it? Let's just say my future wife will love me for me but these long, blond locks are bonus

5. Favorite hairstyle? My favorite is that I dont have to have the same hairstyle everyday but that it can be an ever changing variable.
6. What do you think about when you're alone in your car? New tactics to pursue constant goals.

2. How would ppl communicate in a perfect world? Straightforward in love. Think about how JESUS communicates. It's controversial because it's so straightforward but it's all spoken in love.

3. If you could be anyone else, who would it be? I would never dream of being anyone other than me.

4. Cats or dogs? Cats...but only if it's a lion, panther, leopard, or cheetah. I guess a tiger would be okay too.

5. Least favorite thing about humanity? Our sin nature. I want to see us living to our full potential.

Ash Armand for Invicta's Longhairs

Ash Armand for Invicta's Longhairs

I had the distinct pleasure of shooting with this bundle of Hotness recently and I'm proud to say he's one of the first Invicta's Longhairs to be included in my new coffee table book project on Long Haired Men. This will be a years-long process of finding and shooting the world's most intriguing Longhairs for you, getting their stories and comments and then compiling them into one very intense shot of extreme Longhair love for all you hair fetishists out there. Please help support this project by sprinkling some magic on me here:

Ash Armand, I loved how this background looked with his abs. ;)
We found this cool old bus on the Nelson Ghost Town property, climbed right in to find this awesome light.

It was his idea to do an 'ash' shoot, so we covered him in grease and charcol. Not a bad look for him, I must say. ;)

Beastmode.
